The Problem
The break happened at the peak of a dry summer, when the clay had shrunk enough to pull joints apart. The customer was on watering restrictions and could not afford to lose the little irrigation time they were allowed.
What We Did
The ground was too hard to open cleanly, so we soaked the work area first and dug by hand to avoid damaging the line further. The failed joint was cut out and replaced, and the surrounding run was checked for other joints under strain from soil movement.
